SHD publications
The Service Historique de la Défense (SHD) (Defence Historical Service) publishes itself or jointly, around fifteen works per year on military history and records held by the SHD.
Four collections
- Archives de la Défense (Defence Records of the Ministry of Defence), for the publication of research tools and source guides;
- Études (Studies), for the publication of historic studies, conference acts or study days;
- Références (Reference), for the publication of dictionaries, reference works on administrative history and publications of texts;
- Cahiers d'histoire militaire appliqué (Journals on applied military history): for the publication of short summary documents with the aim of linking historic events to contemporary military issues.
A policy of joint publication
The SHD also publishes works jointly with private publishers or other public organisations.
Publishing with SHD
The SHD also publishes works by independent authors whose works are reviewed by the SHD publications committee. If you are interested in submitting your project for review, please send your work or a detailed description of your project to the following address:

Acquiring SHD publications
The catalogue includes works published by the Defence Historical Service, as well as works published by the different historical services (army, air force, navy and police force) up until 2005. It also includes editions of the Revue historique des armées (Historical Magazine of the Armed Forces) still available for sale. These works are all available for sale, either by writing to the SHD, by purchasing from the museum shop in the Château de Vincennes or from certain bookshops specialising in history.
